What Makes A Good Poodle Rescue Centre?

0

Posted by jorn | Posted in | Posted on 19:06

If you are considering adopting a Poodle from a rescue centre rather than buying a puppy, good for you! Please keep in mind that you will still have to fork out a few hundred dollars in adoption fees. This is still a lot cheaper than getting a purebred puppy. A good Poodle rescue centre will charge about two hundred fifty dollars in adoption fees, sometimes three hundred dollars. This is to discourage those less kindly folks who would sell the dogs for medical research, or worse.

This is why it takes a long time to go through the Poodle adoption process. You will feel like you are going through a human child adoption process. This is the sign of a really good Poodle rescue group! You should never be able to pay a fee and have a dog on your doorstep the next morning. That is a puppy mill, not a legitimate rescue group.

Expect to be grilled on your Poodle information, or lack thereof. If you show no knowledge of Poodle care or needs, then you will be politely turned down, no matter whom you protest to. There is no parent organization that oversees all animal rescue groups in America.

This is not like ordering shoes online, and if it is then you have hit a puppy broker or puppy mill pretending to be a rescue. The Poodle rescue should never offer to ship the dogs anywhere in the country.

A good Poodle rescue centre's website will be loaded with Poodle information. They will not do any sales pressure tactics up front (except for "please donate to out charity" or "current news"), but usually sends you a very lengthy adoption application form. Even if you make a preference for a dog pictured on a site, you will not be given the dog if you are found to be unsuitable.

Always get to visit the dog at the Poodle rescue centre before you sign anything or pay any full fees (with the possible exception of the initial application fee). You want to see if you get along with the dog, how healthy he or she is and what conditions he or she has been currently living in. There may be more than one visit required before adoption is finalized.

Always meet the dog you want to adopt before any money or signatures exchange hands. You want to be sure not only that you and the dog get along, but also that the dog has been getting proper care. You really don't want to bring a dog home, fall in love and then discover that the dog has been trained to attack small children.

These people are mentally ill and do not realize it. Please report them to the police. But they are few and far in between. The odds of you finding a great Poodle rescue centre are very high.

How To Spot A Fake Rottweiler Breeder

Posted by jorn | Posted in | Posted on 18:56

You and your family have discussed a new pet for quite a while and you have decided on getting a Rottweiler. Now you have to do some homework and make sure that you strike up a relationship with a quality Rottweiler breeder. If you get a fake breeder you could be in trouble because your relationship with a breeder should be something that will last for many years and be very important to your dog's life. So take your time and make sure you go through the process of finding a quality Rottweiler breeder for your next family pet.

You can check the national breeder registries on the Internet to see if the breeders you are considering are listed with a registry and adhere to the registry's breeding standard. The American Kennel Club is a very famous registry but there are others, so be sure to check them all. If a prospective breeder is not listed with a registry you may want to find out why and ask what breeding standards they use for quality breeding.

People use the Internet to express their opinions on many topics and perhaps you will find information about fake Rottweiler breeders on the Internet as well. Some people feel so strongly about a situation that they will post on a public message board for all to see and that should be a good indication that you may want to avoid that breeder.

Breeders may also host websites and you can learn a lot from the information offered on a breeder's website. If you see something that makes you uncomfortable then avoid that breeder.

Your vet is a great source for important information like which breeders to avoid. If you do not have a vet then the time when you are getting ready to purchase your pet is the best time to get your vet involved. If you vet has a strong negative opinion about a particular breeder then you may want to steer clear of that breeder and maybe try someone else.

For something like a Rottweiler breeder you may want to check with local law enforcement about the breeders you are considering. You can never tell what kind of activities a breeder was involved with and if they have a record with the local law enforcement authorities then chances are that you do not want to get your pet from a person like that. Always check with the law before getting a Rottweiler.

A breeder is an important person in your pet's life so be sure you pick the right one. Talk to them and see what kind of information they have to offer. If they do not seem to offer any useful or helpful information then you may want to consider another breeder.

You will be dealing with your breeder for many years to come so take the time to do your research and make a good decision for you and your pet.

Shih Tzu Puppies at Play

You have just purchased a beautiful new Shih Tzu Puppy, and you want to make sure that the puppy gets used to your home in the least stressful way possible. So, the first thing that you need to do is make sure that you can dedicate a corner of a room entirely to the dog. There you can place a puppy playpen area, so that not only does your Shih Tzu puppy have his own little area, but it will be easier for you to housebreak him. This is because Shih Tzu puppies do not like to go to the bathroom where they sleep.

As for where you should set up this area for the dog, an ideal place is one that does not have any carpeting. Thus, a corner of the kitchen would be a good idea, since if the floors are tiled you can clean up any messes quickly.

Some new Shih Tzu puppy owners might become stressed out at the prospect of trying to figure out how large the size of the play corner should be. However, it all is self-explanatory, because the play corner should be able to fit in to everyone's living space comfortably.

If you have a large kitchen, you are, of course, at an advantage, because you can then purchase a larger puppy play fence, so that the puppy can play and exercise while you are not at home. Yet, at the same time, if the dog is not yet housebroken and happens to go to the bathroom in the playpen area, it can be easily cleaned up. It should be noted, however, that if you have a puppy, you should never leave it alone for long periods of time.

While a Shih Tzu puppy needs a bed, food, and water, it certainly has other needs for its playpen, otherwise it will become very bored! What a Shih Tzu puppy also needs is toys, and lots of them.

However, while toys are always fun, they can also sometimes be very dangerous. As such, you will need to choose safe toys that cannot be easily torn apart and choked on. Ideas of safe toys include things like healthy dog treats and tennis balls.

Now for the most frustrating part: housebreaking. This is a process that is going to take some time, so be sure to be firm and say "No" when you catch the dog going to the bathroom where it should not. Alternatively, when you take the dog outside and place it on a schedule, you should reward it with a healthy treat or with a hug.

Of course your new puppy also needs a name. You might choose a name based on the dog's personality. Maybe a reference to something in the Shih Tzu breed's long history would be appropriate, or maybe a combination of both a historical reference and personality trait. A little research into the history of the Shih Tzu breed could help you with this important decision.

The ABCs of Dog Training

Posted by jorn | Posted in | Posted on 18:53

Dog's are known as Man's best friend, but interestingly enough they aren't born that way. They must be trained, so no matter how adorable that newborn pup is, or how friendly an older go may be, that doesn't mean that they instantly recognize and follow the rules of the house.

If you are the proud owner of a brand new puppy, or is your dog acting out? Well don't worry, because on here, you will learn everything you have to know in order to train your dog successfully.

I agree it can be very annoying for you if you dont know how to act when your dog is gnawing your shoe, drinking from bathroom sink, messing up the house by urinating, barking when everyone is fast asleep and lot other nuisances.

Please don't get mad at your dog. He is not doing the things he does on purpose. You just need to get his attention and remind him of the rules. He's got to get used to his new surroundings.

A puppys training commences right from the moment he enters your home. However dont think this statement implies the training should be harsh or intense. I am simply implying that you should start imparting it brief 5 minute sessions that should be repeated continuously till the puppy begins to understand what you are trying to tell him.

One important point that you should not forget is that each and every thing is totally new to the puppy. Hence they will have to spend some time learning. If you have bought your puppy from a well-known and a dependable breeder, the dog will have a strong basics that you can use to train him in the lessons he must learn.

Raising a dog is very similar to raising a child, but somewhat faster, because dogs age faster than we do. The basic sit down and kneel provides more then just the basics. It prepares the dog mind when facing outdoor factors.

Basic commands may be taught in the home, however, if you plan to take your dog outdoors with you where he will encounter strangers, his timidity must be overcome. Your pet should be socialized early in life in order to show good behavior around others.

Things To Ask Your Yorkshire Terrier Breeder

0

Posted by jorn | Posted in | Posted on 18:52

After you have made the decision to get a Yorkshire Terrier the next thing you need to do is make sure you choose a good Yorkshire Terrier breeder. One of the ways you can do that is to make sure you know what questions to ask a potential breeder and then what answers you are expecting from them. It is always good to ask a lot of questions of someone as important as the prospective breeder of your future pet.

A breeder that is listed with a breeder registry has a set of proven breeding standards that they follow to try and make sure that the animals they are selling are happy and healthy. If the breeder you are considering is not listed with a breeding registry then you may want to ask why not and also ask exactly what standards for breeding they use if they do not use proven ones.

In all cases a reputable Yorkshire Terrier breeder will offer any new owner ongoing advice and support as they try and raise their new pup. A good breeder is concerned with the health and well being of all the animals they sell and if the breeder you are talking to does not offer ongoing support to new owners then it may be time to start looking around for a new Yorkshire Terrier breeder that does offer that support.

A respectable breeder will make sure that all new owners leave with their pup and detailed care instructions for their new dog in writing. Many will also make sure you leave with a food sample as well to help you know what to feed your new dog and how to take care of them.

A good breeder will also supply a sample of food for new owners so they know what to feed their new dog because your breeder wants to give your dog a chance at a healthy life as much as you do.

You want to go with a Yorkshire Terrier breederthat cares and one of the things you can ask a prospective Yorkshire Terrier breeder is if they offer a policy where they will take back the animal if you can no longer care for it.

You won't get your money back but at least you know that the dog will not be abandoned and that it will be given a second chance at a good home. This is not a prerequisite for any breeder but the best ones offer this service.

It is always a good idea to spend a lot of time talking with prospective Yorkshire Terrier breeders and just see how you feel with them and how you like talking to them. At the end of the day you will still have to be in contact with your breeder for some time so if you are not comfortable with any of the ones you are considering then it may be wise to not do business with them when it comes to your family pet.

Labrador Health And Grooming

Posted by jorn | Posted in | Posted on 18:51

Many dog owners assume that when they purchase a breed of dog with short hair, such as a Labrador Retriever, that they won't have to spend time grooming their dog. They quickly find out that they are mistaken. While it is true that Labrador Retrievers do not require as much grooming as a longer haired breed of dog, there is still some grooming required.

Daily Labrador grooming will lessen the amount of hair the dog sheds in the house, strengthen the bond between dog and owner and help detect and prevent many skin conditions. While daily grooming is an important part of your Labrador's life, there are times when more aggressive grooming measures will need to be taken. There are times when the Labrador will need its ears cleaned, its nail trimmed and it will need to be given a bath.

You will find that your grooming sessions are more enjoyable if you don't have to spend an hour trying to track down your grooming equipment. Try to keep your grooming supplies in one place. You'll find that a small rubber container is an excellent way to keep your dog's grooming supplies in one place.

The trick to successfully bathing your Labrador is to make it as stress free as possible. Start by brushing your dog. This is an activity that they are familiar with from the daily grooming sessions and it should help reassure your dog that you won't let anything bad happen. It is tempting, especially after the dog has been rolling in a smelly carcass it found in the woods, to use the most powerful shampoo you can find.

When you have removed all the dead hair from your dog, you should then use a brush with short firm bristles to brush your dog's coat. While the brush is smoothing the dog's hair it will also collect the dog's natural oils from its skin and deposit the oil on the hair shaft, giving the hair a healthy glow. A gleaming dog is a sign of successful Labrador grooming.

The reason that Labrador grooming is so important, besides extending the life of your vacuum cleaner, is that it the first line of defense when it comes to your dog's health. While you are grooming your dog take a few extra minutes and run your hands over the dog's entire body.

The ears are another important part of Labrador grooming. The breed seems to be susceptible to developing ear infections that are partly cause by the build up of dead skin, wax and dirt on the inside of the ear flap.

After you have finished grooming your dog, wipe the inside of it's ears with a warm washcloth, cleaning the ears will help prevent your Labrador from developing an ear infection

Good Advice On Raising A Siberian Husky Rescue Dog

Congratulations on your choice on bringing a Siberian Husky rescue dog home! You are probably wondering what you can expect from your Siberian Husky rescue dog in terms of behavior or if there are any other surprises you can look forward to and that depends on the abuse they endured in the past but there is some good advice for you to follow that will help you make the transition a lot smoother for not only and your family but for your Siberian Husky rescue dog as well.

The Siberian Husky was bred as a hard working dog that always likes to be active and the chances are that it has been caged up for some time since its rescue so the very first thing you need to do is let your new Siberian Husky rescue dog run. Sometimes this need to run can cause problems with the Siberian Husky rescue dog as a family pet but you will need to get used to this and set aside time every day for the dog to be able to run and be outside.

You will find that a Siberian Husky rescue dog can be very loyal and very devoted to you and your family and that is something that can have its good points and bad points. They are normally very responsive to training but when they do become loyal to their human family they can sometimes become aggressive to strangers and other animals.

Your rescue dog can begin to get protective of your family and this is a fine trait but that can lead to disastrous results if they wind up not trusting any other humans or animals. So socially train your Husky along with all of the other training you will do.

There are a lot of Siberian Husky health problems and conditions and even though the wounds from their ordeal have healed you still need to get your dog to regular vet appointments to make sure that some of that abusive damage did not become permanent. It is difficult to tell immediately how a dog's body will react to abuse and over time the Husky can develop conditions such as digestive problems and eye problems so make sure you get your dog to the vet as often as possible.

It is possible that you have lucked out and you find that your Siberian Husky rescue dog is housebroken. If you find that your Siberian Husky rescue dog is not housebroken then just be patient and use the standard housebreaking methods that other owners have been using successfully for a long time.

The Siberian Husky responds extremely well to training and if you do it right, and use positive reinforcement, then you will find that you will have your new Siberian Husky rescue dog housebroken in no time.

Yorkshire Terrier Rescue Dogs ? Know What You Are Getting Into

There are many advantages to getting a Yorkshire Terrier rescue dog from a Yorkshire Terrier rescue group. Since Yorkies are the second most popular purebred dog in America, chances are that there will be some Yorkies to adopt at your local animal shelter. However, those animal shelter employees and volunteers are overworked and underappreciated. They might not know much about the background or temperament of the Yorkies they have for adoption.

But did you know that purebreds make up about twenty five percent of all abandoned pets? This is what the Humane League of the United States has discovered. You should adopt a Yorkie from an animal shelter or Yorkshire Terrier breed rescue rather than buy a puppy.

The long, silky coats of Yorkshire Terrier rescue dogs need grooming everyday. Keeping the coat trimmed will greatly help with grooming time and keep the dog comfortable. It is possible to learn how to trim your Yorkie yourself, but you should at first go to a professional groomer to see how it is done.

Yorkie's coats grow fast, so expect at least ten trips to a groomer a year. By grooming your Yorkshire Terrier rescue dog every day, they will get used to be handled by you, the groomer, the vet or anyone.

Yorkshire Terrier rescue dogs can be very nervous in their first weeks at a new home. Be patient, don't make too much of a fuss, and keep visitors to a minimum until the dog feels more confident.

Don't let other dogs or kids play roughly with the dog. If a dog gets hurt, especially a Yorkshire Terrier rescue dog, they can bite out of the fear that the pain has brought them. This gentle treatment is one reason why Yorkies are popular with senior citizens.

Yorkshire Terriers, rescue dogs or not, will often have problems in housetraining. This is due to the small size of their bladders, not through an inability to learn. Many Yorkies have learned how to use a cat littler box. They seem to learn litter training easier than some other toy breeds.

Many Yorkies can wind up in shelters just because they fall short in their looks somewhere, instead of for personality problems. Your Yorkie may weigh over seven pounds, have a lot of black patches, may have a full tail or a tail held very low, may have an over bite or dewclaws. They are still purebred Yorkies.

Advice On Raising A Shar Pei Rescue Dog

Posted by jorn | Posted in | Posted on 18:14

Giving a pet a second chance at a good life is always a wonderful thing to do and when you take in a Shar Pei rescue dog you are doing a wonderful and humane thing.

But in the meantime you will need patience and you will need to make sure that you keep an eye out for potentially bad traits and be ready to deal with some of the issues that come along with taking in an abused pet.

Give your dog some space just for a little while. Your dog will never truly be comfortable unless it can get a feel for where it is and have a chance to take in all the new sights and scents of your home. Once the dog realizes it is not in the abusive situation anymore it will start to relax but give it that chance first.

When your Shar Pei rescue dog is getting adjusted to your home you need to reduce the commotion, noise, and sudden movements that are going on in the home to give the dog a chance to get used to your home. A Shar Pei does not like a lot of sudden movements and can get a little confused and even frustrated when there are a lot of things going on and a lot of activity coming at it. So for the benefit of your new dog you may want to keep the clatter down for a little while until the dog gets used to its new home and new family.

In the course of training your new Shar Pei rescue dog it will make mistakes even as intelligent as it is. When your dog makes mistakes do not punish it because that will only make things worse. Punishment will confuse the dog and could spark more aggressive behavior so use only positive reinforcement in your training and remember that the Shar Pei takes to training very well and can get bored quickly so keep it interesting.

There is an aggression with the Shar Pei that comes from its original breeding as an intelligent fighting dog. However they are also fiercely loyal to their family and once they develop that habit they become a wonderful family pet.

They are also very loyal dogs that become very attached to their family and if you show enough patience and love towards them then eventually they will drop the aggression and move to being the loyal family dog they really want to be.

Anything you try to teach a Shar Pei rescue dog will eventually sink in and the dog responds very well to training. But you need to exercise patience and have a little respect for what the dog has been through before you can really make your new dog the loyal family pet it wants to be.

There are a lot of obvious advantages when you give importance to proper dog care for your pet.

First and foremost, you can actually make your dog live longer with proper dog care. Not only that, but you can also ensure that your dog will be healthy and strong all throughout his years with you.

Having a dog as a pet comes with much responsibility. Dogs tend to feed of attention and must get most of their attention from their owners. One important thing to remember when deciding to take on the responsibility of having a pet is that you must give great attention to your dog making sure to never neglect them.

If you are not able to give your dog the necessary attention and time, their health may be affected. Lack of attention may give rise to lack of exercise, hygiene, and/or food. This ultimately will result in health issues and allergies.

Just as we should watch what we eat, so should dogs. However, dogs do not have a choice in what they eat as they must look to us to feed them. Therefore, it is our responsibility as the dog owner to figure out what food best fits your dog. Feeding your dog with appropriate dog food filled with the necessary vitamins and minerals helps your dog life a long and healthy life.

It is important to find out the tendencies of some major name brands of the foods. Do your research online or consult your vetinerarian to figure out the most natural and organically made dog food. Some foods contain chemicals or preservatives you would not want to be feeding your pet.

Remember also to give your dog the correct amount of food portions. Overfeeding can lead to indigestion and overweight issues.

Dog Training the Easy Way

There are many easy dog-training exercises you can use to train your dog. All dogs should have basic dog training, as this is key when you are trying to communicate with your dog. Without any training you and your dog will not understand each other.

Dog training allows you to communicate with your dog in a way that both of you will understand each other. Training a puppy of dog is simply as long as you keep it simple, short and fun for both of you.

Puppies should begin their training as soon as possible, within the first month. Puppies learn a lot within the first month if their lives as they are experiencing their surroundings and learning new behaviors and habits. All family members should be involved in the training and everyone needs to agree on the regulations and rules involved with dog training. Proper training is a commitment and you want to do it right at the beginning, as retaining can be very challenging.

You should have designated areas for eating, sleeping and the toiled and these areas should be consistent for the first month. A schedule should be drawn up of walking feeding, playing and training times and you need to stick to that schedule. You need to monitor how much food and water you give your dog as they may not learn control and have accidents.

When you are away from home a leash and collar can be an excellent tool in order to establish boundaries as well as prevent accidents. However when you are at home you should not confine your dog but allow them to interact with the family.

Dogs are very fast learners so when they do well you should reward them immediately with either treats or stroking. Do not give in to your dog even if they give you that adorable puppy face. You should only reward your dog when he is behaving correctly. To make your dog recognize his name you should crouch down call his name and when he responds let him know he or she is good. You should repeat this many times in order for the dog to become associated with his or her name.

Some common dog behavioral problems that need to be taken care of can be trained away with a lot of attention and patience. Separation anxiety, poop eating, jumping, fearful dogs, excessive barking, digging, chewing, biting and aggression can all be prevented or corrected using the appropriate dog training. The earlier you start dog training the better but a dog can always be trained.

As with any enforced change, we're likely to hear more from veterinary professionals, as well as pet owners, about the pending Swiss pet housing and care regulations. There will no doubt be friends, and opponents, of the plan.

We all know that No Man is an Island, and in agreement with the Swiss Federal Council, on September 1, 2008, no guinea pig or budgie should be either.

The new guidelines aren't targeted only at owners of cavies and budgies, but include 175 pages of regulations that apply to circuses, ranches, and zoos, as well as individuals that possess other domesticated animals.

Supporters of the new regulations, prospected to be enforced in September 2010, include the animals whose care is in question, as well as those troubled about jobless rates in Switzerland. There will be manpower required to enforce these laws, as well as educators needed to teach pet owners.

Though established with the welfare of our animal friends in mind, these pending Swiss pet regulations have been met with a certain dose of skepticism.

Challengers question the potential of these 175 pages to bring order. Case in point,

How can minimum enclosure sizes for budgies and guinea pigs be uniformly implemented?

How will a literal ban on canine possession for those who haven't completed a dog ownership course be imposed? What will happen to dogs whose owners are disobedient?

How will the people of Geneva, where tight dog ownership policies are already in force, react to an additional 16 hours of required education?

Farther out of the budgie budget are minimum cage size obligations for large animals, such as elephants and rhinoceroses. Cleanliness guidelines relate to zoos and circuses, which the Swiss government reserves the right to be adamant about.

Farmers are likely to zoo out about the imminent enforcement. Some regulations are established, like the ban of chicken cages since 1981, but others might come as a shock. Continuous tethering of animals is now out of the question, while swine have get the right to showers on warm summer days and spotless pens all year round. And horses, like guinea pigs and budgies, will no longer be living solitary lives.

Likewise, breeders are going to have to breed a new attitude in regard to care of animals on their properties.

The most recent Swiss animal rights rules will not go into full effect until September of 2010, and until they do, the Swiss administration wants to highlight their wish to encourage learning, rather than to rule with a strong arm. This, on the other hand, does not point toward a lax attitude on their part, when penalties are called for. If an event, such as a dog bite, requires action, action will be taken.

You may own a seemingly indiscernible pet, like a budgie or guinea pig, or a run an association that displays the largest land mammal alive. Whichever way, be prepared for education, restrictions, and tougher environment.

The greatest plan of action for any animal owner will unquestionably be to familiarize him or herself with regulations that relate to their specific animal ownership circumstances.

Whether you're a lifelong Geneva citizen or a newcomer to Switzerland, animal ownership instruction is not an option, it's the law.

Puppy Obedience is Essential

Puppy obedience is something that starts suprisingly early in their development. The amount of respect and puppy obedience in training is determined by the actual owner you purchased from.

Research has shown that until they are at least three weeks old, puppies are not ready to learn at all. When puppies are born they know only of their mom, that they are hungry and that they need frequent naps. At this point the puppy elimination is controlled by reflex. This will change around the 21st to 28th day. They will leave the blanket behind and search for a place to eliminate. Now, dogs begin to gain an awareness of the environment surrounding them, and to respond more directly to external stimuli. Now is the time to make great strides in a puppy's mannerisms and behavior.

Getting Puppies Started with Encouragement

While training puppies to obey, you need not use punishment to induce their readiness to please and do the right thing. Positive reinforcement and treats work best of all. Negative stimuli should well be limited to saying ?no? and blocking any negative actions from your puppy with your hands. Hitting or hurting is unnecessary for a young puppy and it should really be avoided.

Whenever a puppy does what you ask it to do be sure to shower him with a reward of affection and praise to reinforce this behavior. Puppies must be praised to avoid developing a sense of apathy with regard to obedience. After your pet does a command correctly and you praise and caress them, they will then learn that following these things are fun and rewarding. Good feedback and rewards are the surest path to puppy obedience. Using a positive reinforcement and a treat will strengthen the dog's understanding and increase's the dog's willingness to follow commands.

A Consistent and Proper Timed Approach

While puppy training, you should keep in mind that timing is everything. Your movements, actions, and corrections are related to the puppy?s ability to understand the lessons and trainings taught to him. It is imperative that pups learn to recognize that the corrections are given as a result of his untoward action and behavior and that it will not happen if only he did what was expected of him.

For instance, a puppy who?s chewing on a bone or toy in another room is unlikely to act in response to the command ?come,? and if no one brings him to the trainer, he will learn that the command is the same as ?ignore. But if the puppy is told to ?come? under controlled situations, like when he?s on a leash and is gently pulled toward the trainer then praised, he will find out that ?come? means that he should head for the trainer and that it will also bring in the goodies.

Puppy obedience training is best taught in easy exercises, one by one. It will be simpler concept for your puppy, instead of trying to teach all the exercise is a single session. Bring your patience with you when you are training and use positive reinforcement. Slowly your puppy will learn to obey.

What to do With Dog Crate Training

When pen guiding a dog the age doesnt really matter until they become old enough for it. It is usually good to train a dog in the early stages but it can not bar one from the training. Despite the age, pet training is compulsory for every dog, but all this said, not each dog will make it to be petted.

It might not be a right age to handle an older dog in confined space; if taken the same condition in your situation you would need to gate the baby in the kitchen corner.

Crating an elderly dog is delicate and must be handled with utmost care. Older dogs do not have the flexibility and the level of control that they used to in young age. First and foremost, the dog has to be made comfortable in open cages with motivators like toys and food.

Once the dog is getting acquainted to that, now you may lock it in and let it stay there for a longer period of time, when it is fully going on well with that it can be locked up for much longer time. When released it must be in full view of the owner.

In cases of accidents, clean up and go ahead. If an old dog is in the middle of having an accident, it should be taken to the potty area. It should not be scared or bewildered along the process.

Older dogs have their ways to love, understanding, comfort level and tolerance levels. And we have to be responsible enough to understand the accidents, if any, and how to deal with it. Consulting a vet is a wise thing to do if they are not abiding to the house training even after long. Older dogs could develop numerous medical problems that could affect their bladder and bowels. We need to be very careful and informed.

Compassion, love, understanding and patience are the key things while crate training a dog. Dogs are very loyal, faithful and always want to please kind. But, as it gets older, it finds hard to adapt to change.

Keep assured that they are kept loved at all stages so that they please you, no matter training you give to them.

If you are a dog lover, it's important you understand the dangers of using commercial dog food. With the number of dog food recalls that have happened in the recent future it's no surprise more and more people are starting to research the food they are putting in their dog's dish. Much of the dog food you find in the stores has been linked to all sorts of disease and illnesses - obviously you don't want to put your pup's health at risk.

The pet food industry did not just taint themselves, they also caused concern and heartbreak among many dog owners that will never be able to regain the faith that most of us all took for granted with this industry.

Unfortunately many people didn't just see their dog get sick - thousands of dog owners lost their pets because of tainted dog food that they had purchased. It's not surprise that more and more people are starting to look into what exactly goes into commercial dog food.

Unfortunately, even if the dog food isn't "tainted", it is still not a healthy choice for your dog. There are so many horrible ingredients in commercial dog food that can have long term affects on your dog's health.

It's no mystery that there has been a huge trend in healthy eating. As humans we are becoming more aware of the benefits of eating a healthy diet and eating nutritious food to keep our bodies well fueled.

However we often don't think twice about what we are feeding our dogs when we pick up a bag of food for them. However, the same theory applies to any animal - what you feed them has a direct impact on their health and quality of life.

There are some ingredients in dog food that we should flat out avoid. They are not healthy or reliable in quality for pet consumption. They are also used heavily in the dog food industry by the larger companies.

Corn gluten meal is a by-product. This is added to absorb the toxins of the food as it is being cooked and processed. Unforunately dogs don't digest corn very well. In fact, corn is one of the biggest causes of allergies in dogs. The reason many commercial dog food companies use corn is because it is a very cheap source of protein and is used as filler in the food.

Chicken by-product meal is also used in the dog food industry. This is made up of parts of the chickens feet, necks, intestines, etc. They use this as a source of protein as well, yet this it is of such low grade that it does nothing for your dog. It also has the potential to be toxic or tainted.

Soybean meal is an ingredient that is used in order to provide a source of protein. It's cheap and is found in many dog foods. The problem is that soybean is the number one cause of allergies in dogs. It annoys me that they would include an ingredient that they know so many dogs will have a reaction to.

We could list several more ingredients, but I'm sure you get the point. The dog food you find in the stores is made up of such low quality ingredients that can put your dog's health at risk. The companies aren't looking to include the best ingredients for your pup - they just want to make as much money as they can.

When you do your research about feeding your dog the right foods, you will be amazed at the changes you see. Your dogs mood, energy levels, skin, bathroom habits and even their behavior will improve. It's amazing what a change in diet will do.

Does this mean that you can't ever use store-bought dog food? Of course not, but you absolutely must know what to look for. We included a link at the bottom of this article where you can find more information.

There are resources available to begin feeding your dog with food that is not only tasty, but also nutritious to their dietary needs. You want your dog to live a long, happy and healthy life - do what you can to help them out by feeding them the right diet.

Pet Identification is highly recommended in this day and age. Everyone needs the proper documents on there pets, as this also cuts down on the number of strays roaming the streets.

The pet ID could be done by personalized tags, rabies tags, municipal tags, and other ways as well. Your tags would usually include your phone number and name on them. This would enable someone to contact you in the unfortunate situation of your dog getting lost.

Dog ID tags are available as plastic or metal and can be purchased in many different colors. Most people like to have reflective dog tags with collars. This will allow your dog to be identified in the dark.

Now there are many different electronic gadgets available to identify and track your dogs. Microchips and Pet GPS are among the favorites. The chips have to be implanted behind the dog's ears so I recommend the GPS. A dog with a collar is a sign that they are not stray and gives the pet more security.

Tattooing is not a form of identification widely used any more. Therefore the best way to go about tracing your missing animals is Pet ID tags or Pet GPS.

Should You Start With a Puppy?

Do you want to feel the kind of hugging that could warm your heart, the sense that you'll get while touching those soft fur of a puppy and those licks that could almost wet your face all over?

Your heart is not the only part of you that having a puppy could completely melt away since you are more likely to end up using all the dollars in your pocket with all the costs required, however, no matter how tough a person would say that he don't need one, landing up with a dog is the more usual event just before he could back out. There's something charming about bringing home a little fur ball that needs you. Having to train a dog at an early age is indeed a good idea since you can make it cope with your own standard of life and the kind of environment that you belong.

You can also teach your children (if you have) the essence of being affectionate to other creatures particularly to a puppy. When they grow up, they will tend to go over those sweet and fun memories they had with the puppy when they were still young. But don't ever get dazzled by all those fun and sweet moments that a puppy can give you since there are other things that you should also consider - such as paper schooling, walking on a leash, chewing toys instead of designer shoes and other typical puppy behaviors that drive owners to the brink of insanity.

Yes, a puppy is precious, but also very needy. Spending time with a pup particularly at some early stage would surely ask a lot of your time than that when you take care of a mature dog. The shelters are crowded with dogs - many just a few months out of pup phase.

The breed of the dog or the things that it had been through is most likely to be thought about the choice of which dog is best to bring home to a family with kids will somehow depend to the seller or adoption facility's proposition as well as which dog is best for adults to have. You'll know straightaway what the dog's full size is and whether that fits your living space. You are permitted to visit the dog just before you make up your mind so why don't you savor the moment of taking him to a walk? When you're evaluating a litter of pups from a breeder, make sure you get to "meet" mom and dad. You surely want to be aware of what your puppy might be like when it gets more mature.

A puppy will have the most advantage of enjoying the comfort of your home without any trouble, whereas an older dog would tend to react, but that doesn't mean the more mature dog won't love your home, too. The required attention and care or time and effort that a pup would need simply differ to that of an older dog's requirements. A pup has to be trained from square one. It is more likely that older dogs have already been schooled, but if they are not as healthy as they want them to be, you would need to give a lot of effort and money sending them to vets. Or maybe, the aging dog became unruly and no longer had the disposition towards children like it used to be when it was just more youthful.

Depending on your reasons for getting a new dog, giving an older shelter dog the home and loving family that it needs is something that you might like to do than spending much of your time and money bringing home a pure blood pup. But if showing or breeding is your aim, a puppy with papers might suit your needs more. A puppy with complete documentation can surely cater to your desires if you want to show it off or breed in the future. If you plan to show off your dog or have it breed in the long run, then getting a puppy with all the relevant records can surely go with whatever you want or require.

Favorite Breeds of Pet Dogs

Dogs and cats are the most popular pets nowadays, with retail stores charging between one thousand and three thousand dollars at the cash register for pure-bred dogs. There are shelters to adopt dogs and you may not care if the dog is a mix-breed, but in all cases the pets are an investment in cost and time. They must be fed, taken to the vet, given shots, and in the case of dogs, washed or groomed. For this, we human owners get companionship and often some comic relief. There are basic questions involved when deciding on a pet and most of this article will deal with dogs. Cats are known for being low-maintenance pets: they clean themselves, dutifully do their business in the litter box, and they spend 80% of the day sleeping. The real activity in a household centers around the family dog.

Each breed has its own activity level, from the laid-back hound dog to very active breeds like the Jack Russell Terrier or the Pomeranian. Dogs are loyal to their owners, and they expect a fair amount of playtime with the family. They have emotions of their own and the training and psychology of the dog's role should reflect this. They have temperaments common to the breed, but also may have traits that are individual. Higher mammals develop personalities to aid in survival; they have to establish a presence in the ranking of the food chain.

There are important points to consider when acquiring a dog. What size dog is appropriate for the space do you have? How much exercise can you give the dog? Where will the dog live? How much experience do you have with dogs? What do you plan to do with the dog? Remember that they were bred to fulfill certain roles such as herding, hunting, guarding, or killing rats. If your garden is very important to you, you might not want to get a terrier; almost all of them will dig. Dalmatians, pointers, and retrievers need hours of hard exercise - they were meant to go for miles and miles without tiring and they need to run.

North America's most popular dog breed is the Golden Retriever. They have a sunny disposition, they love children, and they're loyal and affectionate. Golden Retrievers are widely used as guide dogs for the blind. They were originally used as a soft-mouthed retriever for wild game hunting. They were developed in the 1800s in Britain, a mix of various sporting breeds - the wavy-coated Retriever, the yellow Tweed Water Spaniel, Irish Setter and the Bloodhound (to sharpen the breed's scenting skills). The Golden Retriever was recognized as a pure breed by the English Kennel Club in 1913. To accommodate the needs of this treasured family pet, they should be kept in homes with a large yard or a country home with lots of room for outdoor exercise.

Boxers and Bulldogs are next in popularity. They are solid dogs, forty to fifty pounds in weight. Even though they love exercise, they can exist well as apartment pets; they're extremely loving and playful, as are Chihuahuas, the smallest of breeds, weighing in at two to four pounds fully grown. They don’t require a lot of space and are ideal companions for adults in apartments and families with older children who can appreciate the fragility of the tiny Chihuahua. They come in long and short coat varieties, so they should be clad in sweater and booties when going for walks in cold temperatures.

Number five in popularity is the Maltese, one of the first of the purebreds to be exhibited at dog shows in North America. The Maltese dog is affectionate, intelligent and sturdy, and loves to romp and play - especially with children. This tiny breed measures up to 10 inches at the shoulder and they weigh up to seven pounds maximum. The Maltese dog has a gorgeous, long, pure-white, silky coat that hangs straight to the ground from a center part running from nose to tip of tail. Its expressive dark eyes and dark nose, lips and eye rims enhance the Maltese dog's exquisite face. Grooming requirements for the Maltese are fairly intensive - the coat needs daily brushing to stay tangle-free and frequent bathing to keep it sparkling white, even if you choose to give it a shorter 'pet' trim. The Maltese dog is a great choice for elderly or disabled people, since its exercise needs are minimal. A similar situation exists in the Shih Tzu breed, good for city-dwellers - loving and playful. They also need frequents brushing.

One breed you don't want in an apartment is the Labrador Retriever, the seventh most popular pet dog breed. They love the outdoors, especially the water…if you throw something in a pond or lake, they'll gladly jump in and fetch it. If you leave the door open when you're in the bath you may end up with a large bathing partner. They're easy to train and have a high energy level, so they're best for suburban or country homes.

Next is the Pug, a playful, mischievous, and intelligent companion who loves attention. Dogs are social animals, so you'll find that all of them crave attention and play. The pug is a favorite breed of royalty since the sixteenth century. They were at first considered a breed from Holland but many breeds like Pugs, Chihuahuas, and Shih Tzus are now thought to originate in China. Pugs are great for apartments, as their exercise needs are minimal. They do tend to get overweight, so a controlled diet is a good idea.

The Pomeranian is the next most popular dog breed. They make good apartment dogs, and you couldn’t have a better watchdog. They have intense curiosity and keen senses; they'll be glad to warn the owner of any noise near or far by going on alert and barking incessantly. They seek approval and attention and with their high metabolisms they can pack away the food without gaining an ounce.

Number ten in popularity is the Yorkshire Terrier, or "Yorkie". It's small, highly energetic, and clever. The Yorkie seems unaware of its small size - they are brave and eager for adventure, and can be aggressive towards strange dogs and small animals. The human must establish pack leadership to keep the Yorkie from taking over the house because the dog can become yappy, doing his best to tell you what HE wants YOU to do. As a cute dog, owners might let them get away with outrageous behavior that no dog should display. They need a lot of human attention and should be given proper boundaries. They are trainable, but can be difficult to housebreak. The Yorkie is an excellent watchdog. Owners should learn to give them some gentle leadership.

Domestic dogs are universally good-natured unless humans cause them to act in another fashion, and they want and deserve love. When looking for a family pet, research the different types of dogs so that when you meet the dog in person, you'll have a better idea of some general traits that will match your family's situation and needs. It's fair to everybody involved, especially the pet who is dependant on you as a loving owner.

Development of dog breeds

Posted by jorn | Posted in | Posted on 12:22

There are numerous dog breeds, with over 800 being recognized by various kennel clubs worldwide. Many dogs, especially outside the United States of America and Western Europe, belong to no recognized breed. A few basic breed types have evolved gradually during the domesticated dog's relationship with humans over the last 10,000 or more years, but all modern breeds are of relatively recent derivation. Many of these are the product of a deliberate process of artificial selection. Because of this, some breeds are highly specialized, and there is extraordinary morphological diversity across different breeds. Despite these differences, dogs are able to distinguish dogs from other kinds of animal.
The definition of a dog breed is a matter of some controversy. Depending on the size of the original founding population, closed gene pool breeds can have problems with inbreeding, specifically due to the founder effect. Dog breeders are increasingly aware of the importance of population genetics and of maintaining diverse gene pools. Health testing and new DNA tests can help avoid problems, by providing a replacement for natural selection. Without selection, inbreeding and closed gene pools can increase the risk of severe health or behavioral problems. Some organizations define a breed more loosely, such that an individual may be considered of one breed as long as 75% of its parentage is of that breed. These considerations affect both pets and the show dogs entered in dog shows. Even prize-winning purebred dogs sometimes possess crippling genetic defects due to founder effect or inbreeding.[18] These problems are not limited to purebred dogs and can affect cross-breed populations.[19] The behavior and appearance of a dog of a particular breed can be predicted to a degree, while mixed-breed dogs show a broader range of innovative appearance and behavior.

This puppy is a mix of many breeds.
Mixed-breed dogs or Mongrels (also called "mutts") are dogs that do not belong to specific breeds, being mixtures more than two in variant percentages. Mixed breed dogs and purebred dogs are both suitable as companions, pets, working dogs, or competitors in dog sports. Sometimes different breed dogs are deliberately bred, to create cross-breeds such as the Cockapoo, a mixture of Cocker Spaniel and Miniature Poodle. Such deliberate crosses may display some degree of hybrid vigor and other desirable traits, but may or may not inherit any of the desired traits of their parents, such as temperament or a particular color or coat. Without genetic testing of the parents, the crosses can end up inheriting genetic defects that occur in both parental breeds.
A breed is a group of animals that possesses a set of inherited characteristics that distinguishes it from other animals within the same species. Deliberately crossing two or more breeds is also a manner of establishing new breeds, but it is only a breed when offspring will reliably demonstrate that particular set of characteristics and qualities.

Your Dogs Diet Can You Harm Your Pet With To Much Protein?

Recent research suggested that higher levels of protein in your dogs diet might lead to kidney failure. Do you know if your dogs diet is safe? Are you killing your furry pal by providing too much protein in your dogs diet? The studies that demonstrated a relationship to high protein levels and kidney failure, that sparked concerns about protein levels in dogs diets were not complete. The research was performed on rats, not dogs. Rats chiefly eat plants as their natural diet. Naturally, rats biological makeup would suggest trouble digesting diets containing high levels of protein. The rats have trouble excreting protein due to their particular dietary requirements, not because the high protein diet causes kidney failure. Thus, where do we stand on protein in your dogs diet? Dogs are naturally omnivorous. In the wild, dogs would hunt or scavenge for food. Your dogs diet would normally be of both animals and plants. Naturally dogs are meat eaters too. Because of this, a dog can easily manage with a diet consisting of 30% protein or more. When the protein consumption is lowered in a dogs diet, renal function does not improve. Renal lesions are not less likely to form when a dog is being fed a low-protein diet. It is not until a blood urea nitrogen, or BUN, test indicates a level of 75, then a reduction in protein consumption should be considered. If you have concerns about the amount of protein in your dogs diet, schedule an appointment to speak with a professional on the subject. Your trusted veterinary can advise you on the specifics in regards to your dogs diet. It is not correct that dogs can not ordinarily digest high levels of protein. Kidney problems do not result from having high levels of protein in your dogs diet. Large amounts of protein are digested safely in your dogs diet, particularly when they primarily come from animal origins.Ten amino acids must be provided in your dogs diet through protein. Only twelve of 22 amino acids can be manufactured in your dogs liver. For this reason, meat such as heart, spleen, and meat by-products all have a place in your dogs diet. A high-quality dog food should contain meat as the first ingredient. This will provide the proper amount of protein for your dogs diet. You know you are on the right track when you turn to nature for advice. Do you ever recall seeing a wild or stray dog happily grazing through the cornfield at mealtime?Aging dogs should not be put on lower protein diets just because of age. As a matter of fact, some older pets want a dogs diet that is higher in protein than when they were at a younger adult stage. Unless your veterinary surgeon advises not to, you should always provide your pet the advantage of quality protein in your dogs diet.Feeding your dog protein should not cause you concern. We all want what is best for our dogs and nature tells us that protein will assist your dog to live a healthy life. If you have questions about protein and kidney failure in your pet, then you should speak to your vet about your dogs diet.

Training for your Chihuahua

Posted by jorn | Posted in | Posted on 12:20

I have heard it said that a Chihuahua is a very difficult dog to train, and this puts a lot of people off of them. But this just is not true. They are great dogs for doing tricks with, they are intelligent, and most importantly, they are highly trainable. And you can train them by rewarding them when they get something right. For example, if you want them to sit when you go to answer the door, then reward them with a treat when they do it, and they will get into the habit of doing that. However, if they get negative results, they are not likely to try something a second time. This is why it is essential that you understand that discipline should not be used when it comes to training your Chihuahua. It simply is not effective at all. And when it does come right then go over the top with your praise, and your treats, and there is every good chance that they will do the same again for you.And another thing to think about is how you plan to give your commands. Will it be by voice, hand signals, or Clicker? Unless you are going to show your dog, I would suggest using verbal commands.Training sessions shouldnt last more than fifteen minutes, but you can have two or three training sessions per day. Be sure not to skip any days, and try to hold the sessions at the same time each day. Start and end each training session with a trick or command that the dog has mastered. Start off your sessions learning some simple commands such as sit and stay, and then when they are mastered you can move on to more complex commands, but remember to do all of this just one step at a time.Remember that these are highly intelligent dogs and the secret to your success in training is to praise them reward them and give them regular treats. At first you will need to spend time on your training, but it will be time well spent.

The Shih Tzu's traces their origin to Tibet where monks, possibly, had been breeding them. Around the 17th Century these dogs were brought into Peking (China) as gifts for the Emperor. They were an instant hit with the royalty and so they then become their exclusive property. The tiny animals stayed protected by Imperial orders for two long centuries. In the 1930 a pair of these lovable dogs were brought to England and from there they reached the USA soil in 1969. Wherever these dogs went they have conquered hearts. Today, the Shih Tzu is one of the most popular breeds across the globe, both in terms of glamorous looks and as a companion. The Shih Tzu loves to be the center of attraction and hate to share the limelight with anyone. They feel much neglected when children are indulged in their presence. Though they are basically very lovable and calm, they tend to show a tendency of jealousy and latent aggressiveness when attention is shifted from them to anyone else. The Shih Tzu needs very little from you other than love. To keep your Shih Tzu happy, allow it to sleep on your lap, pamper it as often as you can and talk to it all the time. Grooming this dog needs special attention because of its long coat. You need to have it brushed with a hard brush to prevent matting of hair and remove the dust that accumulates on it. You need two separate types of combs ? one long toothed for the overall coat on the body and another shorter and denser for the hair around the face and feet. The Shih Tzu comes in all colors. However, when admitted for dog shows the requirements are that there should be a white spot on the head and the tail to be considered as pure breed. The nose of this dog is flat and begets the color of the coat ? if it is dark it has a black color nose, if it is light colored then the nose too would light in color. People who live with Shih Tzus find these dogs completely adorable. They have a lot of spunk for their size and they carry themselves with great dignity and aplomb. This is one reason why many people call them royal dogs. Since the Shih Tzu is very friendly and receptive, many people prefer to train their dogs themselves and find it is not difficult at all. Just be sure use a lot of patience and many treats.People who have lived with a Shih Tzu are convinced that these dogs are human on the inside, as they reflect in their behavior a maturity and understanding of human behavior that cannot be explained otherwise. If you want a dog that loves you forever and cannot live without you ? the Shih Tzu is your choice.

When you were a kid, having a wild dog for a pet was probably not so bad for you. You always had someone to blame little "accidents" on, but now that you've gained a few years and some little wisdom. Plus, it's YOUR stuff getting destroyed now, so the novelty has worn off. It's time to look into professional help. Choosing the appropriate dog training course can be difficult, but with these tips you should be able to find the "best fit" for both of you. Is a dog training course really necessary and what are the benefits? For one there is the safety of your children. A properly trained dog is proportionately less likely to bite. You and your dog will be able to have more fun because you won't be afraid to take him/her out to the local park to play catch. What's your learning style? Do you learn best by reading, by seeing something done or through verbal instructions? Knowing the answer to this question will help you to narrow down your search considerably and make the process easier for you and the animal. If you are uncomfortable your dog WILL pick up on this, delaying the process. Now that you know your training preferences, the dog breeder where you got your dog from could be one of your first stops. Most established breeders got that way by entering their dogs into shows to proof the pedigree. So this is going to be a person who knows what they are talking about. Build a rapport and you may even learn some of their personal secrets. An often overlooked den of information is the humane society, but the staff and volunteers who care for the animals there do so for genuine love of animals. They spend day after day working to turn the meanest animals into docile pets deserving of a good home. It stands to reason then, that they may have learned more than a few tricks in their tenure. Another reason to visit the shelter is that they often offer discounted training courses. You can visit dog parks, or other locales that dog owners and their charges frequent. Watch for well-behaved dogs and approach the owner. Ask how they went about training their dogs. The answers you receive this way may be quite different from the breeder's and that will help you to tailor your experience to you and your dog. Ultimately, you may even opt for a home-based dog training course. This will allow you to train your puppy in an environment that is already comfortable and familiar for both of you. Many professional dog trainers have begun to market video-based courses as well as books.
